Because DS9’s thought processes are a little different, he is just finishing learning his addition and subtraction facts. He has done remarkably well, but we are always looking for a better way to help him remember his facts. Like most kids, he learns better when the learning environment is a game.
Recently, I was asked to review POP Addition & Subtraction (available for $9.99) from Learning Resources. Learning Resources is a company that helps make learning “hands on”.
POP Addition & Subtraction is a game that includes 90 math fact cards in the shape of gumballs, 10 POP cards, and a spinner. In this game, a player spins to see how many cards to pick from the box (1, 2, or 3). After picking the cards, the player must answer the math facts presented on each card picked. The player gets to keep the “gumballs” with math facts that he answered correctly. Each player has to watch out for the POP cards, because when one is picked, that player must put all the earned “gumballs” back into the box.
I loved that this game can be as slow or as fast as we wanted to play it. There was no timer, so there wasn’t any pressure put on DS9 to answer in a certain time. At first, he did have problems when he had to put his “gumballs” back in the box after picking a POP card. When this happened the next day, he did better with it. During this past week, we have started every school day by playing this game for 10-15 minutes. It is a less stressful way to drill addition and subtraction facts than drills online.
While there are a couple of other variations of play, including with a timer, we prefer to play it more low key. This game is good for learning the facts and for retaining the facts. Also, I think it is also helpful for DD12, who is concentrating on long division, to be able to refresh her straight addition and subtraction facts while interacting with her brother.
Would anyone like to win one of these games for your children? This game can be beneficial whether you homeschool or are looking for something to help drive home what your child is learning in a public/private/charter school situation.
