Tips for Keeping the Kids Happy on a Road Trip

Tips for Keeping Kids Happy on a Road Trip

Road trips have to be one of the most fun things to do as a family.  However, kids are human, and long road trips can get tiring and boring for kids as much as it does for adults.  Here are some tips for keeping the kids happy on a road trip.  Happy kids = a happy trip.

Lots of snacks!

Let’s not forget how hungry everyone gets in the car.  If your kids are anything like my son, they are asking for food as soon as you back out of the driveway.  Don’t forget to pack your kids’ favorite snacks while you’re on a road trip.  You can pack healthier snacks, too.  Snacking doesn’t necessarily have to mean junk food.  A good combination will keep the kids happy.

Drink water and avoid sugary drinks!

It might be tempting to allow your kids to drink lots of juice and sugary drinks while on the road, but it’s wise to avoid this.  Why?  Sugar can help make your kids extra antsy and hyper, and it’s hard for them to get the “wiggles” out while they are stuck sitting in a vehicle for long periods of time.  Drinking water helps clear out the toxins and also helps to keep them properly hydrated.

Bring their favorite electronic devices.

Think about it.  When you’re looking at your phone or reading, time seems to pass more quickly.  Having that favorite electronic device with favorite apps, books, and movies helps to keep your kids happier.  The hardest part will be figuring out how you will charge it once the battery life has been depleted.

Talk it out.

Kids can get cranky while traveling.  My kids travel very well.  They always have, but after many hours in the car, they tend to get a little “short” with each other.  Take the time to ask your kids how they’re doing and if they need anything.  Talking to your child helps calm them and shows you care about how they feel.  It doesn’t do anybody any good if you drive so many hours in a day that you reach your destination all worn out and cranky.

Keep them busy.

Keeping your kids busy will make the time seem to pass quicker and keep them happier, too.  Put together “busy bags” that are custom made to each child.  Kids love to have little things in their hands to keep them busy.  We also bring games with.  You can even make your own simple games to keep the conversations going.  Here is an easy conversation starter that you can make yourself to take along on trips.

Physical exercise is necessary.

Stopping is a given for any vehicle that has kids in it; however, getting physical exercise can also help keep everyone happy.  Look up a few trails that your family can walk on while you’re headed to your destination.  If you can’t find something to do, make up your own trail!  Do jumping jacks, move around and get those arms and legs moving.  Even a stop to walk around a mall works to get the “wiggles” out and clear the mind before getting back on the road.

Not only will these tips keep the kids happy, but they’ll also keep you happy!

We try to bring a car bag…snacks and fun things to do. On the way home, I add a few new things to the bag so they will have something new to look at. I like the idea about stopping. More than just for getting out; it’s a great idea to try to find fun attractions or things to do along your trip.

Great tips I think especially the physical exercise. et the kids out, let them stretch their legs. Traveling most times isnt about the arriving its about the trip!
