I received a copy of the Current on DVD from Family Christian. After watching it, I’ve had a hard time trying to figure out how to approach this review. This movie wasn’t exactly what I expected.
From the back of the DVD:
At 13, Jake (B. Bradenton Harper) thinks he has life all figured out. He would go to college on a baseball scholarship and be drafted into the majors. But Jake’s dream vanishes when he inadvertently witnesses a hold-up at a Chicago convenience store. Wracked with concern for his family’s safety, Jake’s father decides to leave the city violence behind and move back to rural Minnesota. Despite Jake’s angry protestations, the family moves to Providence River Campground to live and work as the site’s caretakers.
Forced to clean toilets and perform menial chores as part of the campground staff, Jake becomes even angrier at his dad and their new life. Then, the former city boy meets Peter (Blade Yocum) and Brian (Dariush Moslemi), a father and son across the river. Jake and Peter form a fast friendship that God uses to transform Jake’s life in unimaginable ways.
This sounds like a great movie for older kids, right? Well, as I found out, it depends on how mature your older kids are. This movie does a great job of showing that God is working even through bad times; however, these particular hard times are acted out in the movie. I didn’t expect to watch a child drowning in this movie. I know that life is full of sorrow and that God is working, but it is hard to watch so much sorrow in one movie.
I think this movie does a wonderful job showing how God can bring good out of bad, but there should be some sort of warning on the DVD cover stating that there are mature themes. From all appearances, it seems to marketed as a family movie. I think this would be good in older youth groups. I saw someone mention online that this DVD was recommended for 12+, but I have not found that on the DVD cover nor on the Family Christian website.
If you are looking for a movie that shows how God can changes lives, the Current is for you. Just make sure to watch it before showing to kids to make sure they can handle the death scene.
