Apple Pie Dried Apple Rings
Fall is not quite in the air, but I don’t really need an excuse to make a recipe using the delicious fall flavors of apples and spices. We have a few fruit stands right down the road from us, so it is easy to get fresh apples right now. My favorite apples for dehydrating are Gala, Empire, Red Delicious. This recipe for Apple Pie Dried Apple Rings has two great features:
1. While they are in the oven, they make an amazing smelling air freshener.
2. When they are done, they make a healthy and yummy snack.
You can slice these by hand, but using a slicer like a mandolin is helpful in cutting thin and evenly sized slices. Consistent sizes make for consistent drying. Also, I do mine in the oven in an attempt to cut out the surplus of small appliances, and it works just fine. If you have a dehydrator, you can make these following the manufacturer’s dehydrating directions. Apple chips are not only a great snack as is but can be crumbled and used in trail mixes or sprinkled on top of ice cream if the weather is still warm.
Ingredients:
2-3 apples for baking
1 Tbsp. apple pie spice
1 tsp. cinnamon
3 Tbsp. brown sugar or granulated sugar
Handy items for preparing the apple rings:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 225°
If you prefer, peel the apples. I actually prefer the flavor and the color that the peel gives to my dried apples, so I just wash them and leave the peel on. If you have a picky eater, you might prefer to take the peel off.
Core apples
Slice apples to approximately ⅛” – ¼”
In a bowl, combine cinnamon, apple pie spice, and sugar well.
Toss each apple slice in sugar mixture to coat both sides.
Place rings on baking sheet, leaving room between each one for air to circulate.
Halfway through baking time, flip each slice with a pair of tongs, and rotate tray for even baking.
Bake for 60-90 minutes, start checking at about 45 minutes, until desired doneness is reached. They are good left slightly chewy or completely dehydrated. It’s just a matter of preference.
Store in an airtight container.
