It seems like my son always has to be doing something with his hands. He likes things that are “squishy”. You know, the thin rubber/plastic toys that are spiky and have air inside. The ones that stretch and are like a really thick balloon? He LOVES them.
He also likes to play with Playdoh and Moon Sand. This is actually a good thing because it works his hand muscles which are weak to begin with. This will help strengthen his hands some. Besides working his hands, it also gives him some of the stimulation that he seems to crave.
One of the other “squishy” items that he likes to play with is bread dough. I am usually in a hurry when I make bread, so he doesn’t always get the chance to beat it down. However, when there is time, he LOVES to beat the dough down. As he alternates between squishing the dough between his fingers and punching it down with his fists, he gets some joint compression, too.
What are some of the things that you do to encourage tactile stimulation for your child?
