My family had the pleasure of reviewing one of the Z-Guides from Zeezok Publishing. Honestly, I wasn’t quite sure how it would work. When I was asked what Z-Guide we would like to peruse, I was at a loss because there were SO many choices of different time frames from Ancient Civilizations to the Vietnam War.
Because I felt the elementary Z-Guides would more than likely be more on DD12’s level, I chose a movie that I knew she would be interested in. An American Girl movie about the Great Depression, Kit Kittredge.
From the website:
This guide contains a topic overview, movie synopsis, and ten learning activities based on this family-friendly film. Learn more about the hardships families faced in the Great Depression. Decipher coded messages using hobo signs. Design your own Depression era fashion show. Be a journalist, like Kit, and write a newspaper article. Play “Who Am I?” with your family and friends. Learn Depression-related vocabulary. Distinguish irony from foreshadowing. Determine whether prejudice is ever acceptable. Share personal responses to the “For Family Discussion” questions and experience life in middle America during the worst economic depression in American history.
What I thought about this product: I loved that the Z-Guide gave the history of the Great Depression, as well as, a synopsis of the movie. There were questions for DD12 to answer while watching the movie, and I felt that this made her pay more attention. I liked that there were questions to research about the Great Depression, as well as, activities designed to make her “put herself in Kit’s shoes”. I felt that this was a great product and definitely worth the price.
