A Holistic Approach to Brushing Teeth

I was sent a bottle of OraMD to try before I moved.  First, I want to say that I try to avoid reviewing a product like this during something so stressful as moving.  With our relocation being moved up several weeks earlier than expected, a couple of items ended up on the back burner.  OraMD being one of them.

So, last night, I took the bottle out of the bag it was placed in and looked at it.  Secretly, I was afraid that it would sting like fire.  OraMD is a holistic alternative to toothpaste; however, it is a liquid and doesn’t have the foaming agent like toothpastes do.  It is made of “100% Pure Botanical Oils of Almond, Spearmint, and Peppermint.  So, if you are allergic to nuts, you might not want to try this.

The bottle I received is 15 ml or .5 ounces.  It is tiny; however, you are only supposed to use 2-5 drops of the liquid on the toothbrush.  It can also be used as a mouthwash (2-5 drops in 1 ounce of water) or as a breath freshener.  The cost for this bottle is $22.97 from Trusted Health Products or $26.97 from Amazon.  It’s not cheap; however, not much is used at each time.  I think it would really be hard to compare pricing to toothpaste.

So, my husband and I both tried this last night.  I used the 5 drops and found it very overpowering and strong.  I expected the almond oil to tone down the mint, but it was as if the almond oil wasn’t even there.  It didn’t sting at the time, but I did find a sore spot in my mouth later.  The one thing I really enjoyed was the clean feeling of my teeth after brushing.  The pamphlet says that because there is no fluoride that OraMD is safe for kids as young as 3.  I really don’t think many kids that young would even try this after smelling it.  I know my kids at 10 and 13 wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot pole.  I do plan on continuing to use it and will update here if there is anything that happens:  good or bad.

While there is no foaming agent or fluoride, there is also no whitening agent.  The literature from the company says that baking soda or peroxide can be used for that.  Now, I have heard of baking soda for whitening but not peroxide.  There are other warnings to this product like not using while pregnant.  I am not a chemist or dentist, so please research this all for yourself before using anything like this.
