Learning to Spell the Fun Way

Thank you to Educational Insights for allowing my family to review their Wordical game!
Wordical 1Wordical is a fast-paced word building game for 2-8 players aged 8-adult.  Wordical is available from Educational Insights.  Wordical is comprised of 108 consonant cards and 2 vowel dice.  I’m going to let you take a quick look at how this is played before I talk about what I thought of the game.

If you can’t see the video in this post, you can also see it at http://youtu.be/i0uAZNkdRLE.
Doesn’t that look like fun?  Basically, each player has 5 consonant cards.  One player rolls the vowel dice, and the players compete to build words using their cards and the vowels rolled.  After each player makes words, the players take cards from the pile to give them a total of 5 cards.  Then, the next player rolls the dice.  Play continues until the pile of consonant cards is gone.

For DS10, this game is too fast-paced, so we modified the game to work for him.  He enjoys rolling the dice, so we have each player roll his own vowels.  Then, that player builds a word.  After that, the next player rolls the dice and builds her word.  This allows DS10 to take his time and takes the pressure of competing with his sister out of the picture.  This gives him the time to really look at the letters and plan his word.  I truly believe this game is helping him work on his critical thinking skills and spelling skills at the same time.

Wordical 2How many words can you make from the above cards and dice?

If you would like to purchase a Wordical game for your family, you can find it on the Educational Insights website for $12.99 plus shipping/handling.

The first thing we do to encourage spelling is to read read read! There’s no better way to expose kids to words & have them see their value.
