My favorite memory of my dad is when all 5 of us kids were younger and it was in the 1990’s in Sothern California. We had a huge earthquake and there were big aftershocks for hours that day. We were all very scared and huddled together on the couch. So my dad had the idea to take us up the hill to the mountains so that we couldn’t feel the earthquakes anymore. We were relieved and it took our minds off of it completely. We had a great time exploring, shopping, and boating on the lake. I have always remembered that day. My father the hero.

One Sunday, I woke up to find out that my dad was sick. Nothing serious. It was just a cold or flu, but my dad was the type of person who jogged 10 miles a day normally and only 4-5 miles when he was sick. For my dad to skip jogging and church because he was sick meant that he was really not feeling well. My mom never went to church when my dad was sick. She would always say she needed to stay home and take care of him so my dad being sick meant no church for any of us. I was disappointed because I was looking forward to going to church. When my dad saw that I wanted to go to church, he got dressed and took me to church. My dad showed me that 1) church is important. I know that he wouldn’t have done that for just any plan. 2) I am important to him. Oddly, my dad and I went to church alone that Sunday. My mom and sister stayed home. I love my dad.

One of my favorite memories of my Dad is when I received a bouquet of flowers at work from him. We shared a bathroom and being a Ret. Col . he did things the same way every time. It drove him crazy that I did not change the toilet paper roll after the old one ran out. Inside on putting a new roll where the old one ran out I would grab a new roll and I would then leave it sitting the sink instead of replacing it to its proper place. My Dad saved all the rolls I didn’t change and had a bouquet of flowers made out of them and sent then to me at work. Of course I was completely embarrassed because everyone wanted to know why I had empty toilet paper rolls in a flower bouquet. This is one of my favorite memories of my Dad because it really showed what a great sense of humor he had. This is one of my favorite memories of my Dad because we both laughed about the way he taught me to change the toilet paper roll.

One summer, before I was old enough to be home alone, my dad was laid off. Bad news for him, but it kept me out of daycare for the entire summer. We went to either the beach or fishing every day it didn’t rain. Best summer ever.

My dad worked a lot when I was growing up, so my favorite memories are from when he was home and let me “help” with whatever project he was working on, because there’s always a project. I’ve helped hang Christmas lights, re-side the house, pour cement, paint, etc.

I’ll never forget riding in my dad’s old blue truck when I was little. I would sit in the middle and we would go to my Grandma’s house. I always wanted to go with my dad.

One of my favorite memories of my dad is him taking us camping and taking us to the go-cart track to drive the go-carts. My sister and I had tons of fun with him when we were kids.

My favorite memory is when I was six years old and at swim lessons. We were learning to go off the diving board and I was terrified. He had just got off work (he worked third shift) and he walked up to the fence behind the diving board and said “Heather Marie.. you can do it” and I got the courage to jump. I remember that 30 years later!

Dad had to work on the road before he retired but he always found time to spend time with us. We would go camping and fishing on the weekend if he was home.

My favorite memory with my dad was building a snow bear family. The “papa” bear was about 6 feet tall and the “baby” bears were probably around 3 feet tall. Our snow bears ended up getting put into the local newspaper.

One of my favorite memories is watching and learning about football. He would teach me the game and we would spend hours passing the football. Our dream was to go to the Super Bowl and we did in 2004 when our Carolina Panthers was in it, so much fun, even though we lost. 🙂
