10 Steps to Stop Bullying

10 Steps to Stop Bullying

We live in a world where bullying seems to be an everyday occurrence no matter where we are.  However, sending our children into a world of bullying is heart-breaking and lonely for your child.  Although you can’t always predict when bullying will happen, there are ways to stop it.  These tips are targeted towards kids who may be dealing with a bully.

Have a plan in place:

Since you can’t predict when bullying will occur, always have a plan in place for when a “bully attacks.”  Help your child have the tools they need to help protect themselves and stay out of danger.

Never ignore bullying:

Whether the incident happens once or twice, it’s important to address bullying.  Although it’s easy to write off bullying, this is always something that should be taken seriously.

Talk to students about bullying:

It’s easy for a school to put “bullying” policies in place, but it’s hard to enforce those policies.  Take the time to talk to individual students about bullying and what can happen during these types of incidents.

Always ask for help:

Parents don’t have a lot of leeway when it comes to dealing with bullies.  If the situation calls for it, always ask for help from professionals.  Bullying can get out of hand quickly, so it’s important that the proper authorities are notified.

Sign your child up for bullying training:

Whether or not your child’s school wants to admit it or not, bullying will always happen.  It’s important to equip your child for the outcomes.  There are hundreds of bullying training workshops available.  You just have to find one right for your child.

Take a stand:

Teaching our kids to sit back and do nothing is never a good thing.  It’s important to give children the proper tools they need to take a stand.  Bystanders are some of the most important people when bullying.  Teach your children to ask for help from an adult when possible.

Start a School Campaign:

If you notice that bullying is a huge problem in your school, then help your child start a campaign.  The more people who stand up for what’s right; the more “light” is shed on the situation.  Bullying is never okay, and a school campaign is a great way to let people know you’re taking a stand.

Speak up:

Sometimes speaking up is the only way to get a bully to stop.  If your child sees someone getting bullied, it’s okay to speak up.  It’s even better to get an adult involved, so they can intervene into the situation.

Keep communication open:

Make sure your kids know they can come to you for anything and everything.  If something is bothering them, it’s important that they talk to you.  This may be the only way you get the bullying to stop.

Teach your child to make good decisions:

The prevention of bullying starts with each individual.  Teaching your child to make good friend choices is one way to stop bullying in their circle.  Who we hang around with does impact the “person” we become.

What are some ways you have been able to stop bullying?
