5 Tips for Keeping Your Valuables Safe at School or Work

Most schools seem to have started in the past week or so around here, and I know there are a few that will be starting this week.  Have your children headed back to school, yet?  Have you thought about ways to keep your child’s valuables safe?  With so many things going on, it’s hard for kids to keep an eye on their things all the time.

Keeping things safe is not just a problem in school; it is also a problem in the work place.  What is sad is that theft really shouldn’t be a problem in either place, but theft seems to happen everywhere.  So, here are my five tips for keeping your valuables safe.

Leave Unnecessary Things at Home

I know this may seem like a simple tip, but it is one that many don’t follow.  Do you need everything in your purse at school or work?  I personally take the minimum that I need in my “work bag” and leave the rest at home.  Just remember to transfer your things back to your purse when you get home.

Don’t Leave Valuables Visible in Your Car

Obviously, this applies to older students and those who work, but it is a very important point.  There were several vehicles broken into where I work, and we were told that we shouldn’t leave anything visible in the car.  Not even a charging cord hanging down.  Why?  Well, if the charging cord is hanging down and appears to end under your seat, someone might “assume” that there is a valuable plugged into the cord under the seat.  So, the car is thoroughly cleaned out, and nothing is left in sight.

Place Valuables in Your Trunk

If you don’t have a safe place to put your valuables inside school or work, lock them in your trunk.  Now, this tip makes the assumption that you have a regular trunk and not a hatchback.  Also, you want to lock them in your trunk at home, not in the parking lot of school or work.  You don’t want anyone to think you are leaving valuables in your trunk because trunks can be broken into.  That being said, if you were to break into my trunk, you would find that it is empty.

Find a Safe Place at School or Work

Most schools have lockers for students to place their valuables and books.  Until recently, I didn’t realize that employers sometimes provide lockers, too.  As long as there is a good lock, a locker is a great option to keep valuables safe.  If you work in an office, you might have access to lock your valuables in a desk drawer or filing cabinet.

Find a Safe Place within That Safe Place

What if your locker is not just yours?  Some schools have to pair students together to share lockers.  Yes, some employers do the same thing.  I share my locker with a coworker, and until recently, we didn’t have a lock on our locker.  There have been complaints of theft lately, so we now have a lock that we share.  Each of us knows the combination.  Master Lock sent me (free of charge) a SafeSpace to try out to store my valuables in and place it in my locker.

Master Lock SafeSpace Open

The best parts of this SafeSpace are that it can be locked to a fixed object and that the combination can be customized.  It is small and lightweight.  You can find the specifics, including pricing, on the Master Lock website.

Master Lock SafeSpace Full

Here you can see how small it is, but it still holds what I absolutely need.  I have some keys, an iPhone, and some money in this SafeSpace right now.  I could also put a very small wallet about the size of a business card case in the SafeSpace, too.  I think this is a great option for shared spaces!

Now through Sept. 7th, you can visit www.MasterLockPhotoHunt.com for the chance to win back-to-school security items!  Good Luck!

Disclosure:  I received the above item free of charge for the purpose of sharing it with you.  I received no other compensation, nor was I required to give a positive review.  All opinions are mine.
