Say Hello to Fruit Season and Goodbye to Fruit Flies!

Great green way to get rid of fruit flies. #green #homemaking

A few years ago, my kitchen was overrun with fruit flies.  It was summer, and I had bought a lot of fruit. There were so many that I was at my wit’s end.  I searched the Internet looking for some way to get rid of these pests.  The only thing that I could find that sounded plausible used vinegar to attract the fruit flies.  I quickly went out to buy the Apple Cider Vinegar, hoping that I would soon be free from the fruit flies.  My trap worked, and soon, my house was fruit fly free.  Now, I set out my trap at the first sign of fruit flies to make life simpler.

Fruit Fly Solution 2

I take a small bowl and fill it about half-full of Apple Cider Vinegar.  Then, I take plastic wrap, and place it tightly over the top of the bowl, wrapping it under the bowl to secure it.  Lastly, I take a fork and poke small holes in the plastic wrap.  The Apple Cider Vinegar quickly attracts the fruit flies.  See the fruit fly on the edge of the bowl above at about 1 o’clock?

Fruit Fly Solution 3

The fruit fly walked across the plastic wrap until it found one of the tiny holes.  Note: The hole needs to be large enough for the fly to enter but small enough that it can’t get back out.  The fly crawled through the hole and walked around the glass until it was tired enough that it fell into the Apple Cider Vinegar.  If you look closely at the picture above, you will see three fruit flies that are ready to head down the drain.

It will take some time to clear out a large infestation, but this method has always worked well for me.  I currently have quite a few flying around in our house.  I’m not sure if they are all fruit flies or if some of them are gnats, but I have set up my trap, hoping they are all fruit flies.  Some of them are flying in the dining room, so I will likely set up a second trap there if I don’t have the pesky flies cleared out by the end of the weekend.

If you suffer with fruit flies this summer, I hope this tip will help clear them out.

This is great! I can always use tips like this. I love going to farmer’s markets and getting lots of fresh produce – but don’t want the potential fruit flies that will likely show up.
