ecologyThank you to Master Books for allowing me to review a copy of their new Ecology Book.

The Ecology Book is a new book arriving April 1, 2013 as part of the Wonders of Creation series.

  • Authors:  Tom Hennigan & Jean Lightner
  • Size:  8 1/2 x 11 inches
  • Casebound
  • 96 pages
  • Recommended:  Middle School – High School
  • Price:  $16.99

Details:

While this book is recommend for 5th through 11th grades, it is broken down into sections based on grade levels.  Level One is aimed toward 5th and 6th graders and address the 5 W’s of Ecology.  The Who, What, Where, Why, and How covers the basics that the younger set needs.  Level Two reaches 7th and 8th graders.  They will cover the Level One material plus delve deeper into ecological issues.  This level will also have “Words to Know”.  Level Three is geared toward 9th-11th graders.  It will cover the material of all three levels, with the third level adding even more information.  The book includes a glossary with index and two appendices covering “Tips for Doing Good Science Experiments” and “Simplified Ecological Sampling Methods”.

What did I think?

I like a Biblical approach with any science book that I use with my children.  This book certainly offers that as it begins by talking about the Trinity.  There are many Bible texts used within this book.  The colors are vivid with very detailed diagrams for learning the concepts.  I LOVE being able to use one book for both kids while still offering enough information for my teenager.  While this book is geared for 5th-11th grades, it is still simple enough for my younger one.  DD13 is not at the upper end of this book, yet, but I think if she were, I would probably assign projects outside the book work.  There is supposed to be an additional study guide available for $3.99; however, I have not seen it, yet.  I’m not sure how much extra work and projects the study guide might offer.

You can find out more about The Ecology Book on the Master Books website.

Disclaimer:  I received a pdf of The Ecology Book for the purpose of this review.  I’m supposed to received a hard copy when the book comes out, but I have not received it as of posting this review.  I was not compensated in any other way, nor am I required to give a positive review.  All opinions are 100% mine.
