As homeschoolers, we have the ability to really investigate things that interest our kids more. For instance, DD12 loves horses, so we can work on a unit study about horses. We are able to integrate most of the core subjects into her areas of interest.
Well, DS8 wants a spy kit for Christmas. I know that this is more directed toward Cars 2 and spying; however, I am working on a spy kit that will let him feel like a spy while learning something worthwhile. I have won some books from other bloggers over the last month or so that will work well in this spy kit and direct him to use his spying to investigate things that have happened in history.
While we are on the subject of investigating, I must say something about our visitors last night. I just wish I had a camera that could have taken pictures of what we saw, but I will include a photo of similar visitors that we’ve seen before.
The kids and I were watching some Christmas shows last night when I heard what sounded like footsteps on our deck. I rushed to the light switch in hopes of scaring off any intruder. When I looked outside, I didn’t see anything on the deck, but I did see some movement beyond the railing. I called to the kids to let them investigate who (or what) was visiting us. What they saw was…
three elk trying to empty out our large bird feeder hanging from our tree. Elk are bigger than deer, but I was still surprised that they were able to reach the bird feeder, let alone, chase it through the air with their snouts to empty the entire contents on the ground. I don’t know if they were hungry and thought it was something to eat, or if they were young elk looking for something to play with. Whatever the reason, it was really funny to watch!
We are a homeschooling Disney loving family. You are so right that one of the joys of homeschooling is being able to incorporate the things which each individual child finds inspiring. My 10 year old son spends a lot of time learning about animation and I a pleased to say that I have Pixar to thank for that.
Oh my youngest likes to investigate everything! I have to encourage my oldest though… “Mom what does this word mean?” “Mom, what is this talking about I don’t know what this is..” “Mom, how do you…?” and then I come back with, “Well, why do you go look it up and come back and tell me?” (She LOVES it when I say that..) =p
What fun with the elk! We only have deer down here but not over here at our house in particular. We’ve only seen deer tracks once or twice and we’ve never seen them near our house. But across town at my MOM’S HOUSE they have LOTS! They look out the window and there’s a herd in their front yard! It’s always so fun for the kids when we’re over, to discover their presence and then “spy” on them through the windows as they look for things to eat. =)

I love the spy kit idea. My oldest daughter had a spy birthday party one year, with treasure hunts, magnifying glasses, secret codes… even the message on her cake was in code. I love the way you’re making his gift tie in with school. 🙂
