ABCs of Homeschooling – W and X are for…

Today, we are on the letters W and X of homeschooling with Dawn over at 5 Kids and a Dog.  X is such a hard word to use that I will have to “fudge” it a little.  Mmmmmm.  Fudge does sound good now, doesn’t it?

Having lived in tornado alley, eXtreme weather is one of the things we keep an eye on and discuss frequently in our school and in our life.  Storms are frightening to many children, but sensory issues seem to multiply the issue.

When we see the clouds line up like this, the whole family starts to keep a closer eye on the sky.

The first one who sees a flash of lightning, shouts out, “Lightning!”  Then, DS8 prepares for the thunder.  We study weather to make him more aware of the whys.  After all, he is my “science guy”!

Of course, we all love to see the beautiful sunset instead of the storm.

For some reason, neither child minds this kind of eXtreme weather.  {Note: This is a buried barbeque, just to give you an idea of the depth.}  Not only did they not mind it; they thoroughly making sled runs and a snow cave!

Dawn has announced that we are going to go back through the ABCs once we are done.  I am thinking about going through them again with her, but I plan to change the format up a bit to make it a little different.

I am SO GLAD that our extreme weather is usually as severe as a hot lightening storm in August, or a snowstorm in December. You can keep those tornadoes, and hurricanes too, thankyouverymuch! We hardly even have earthquakes, which I did grow up with in CA and AK. I’ll take those over the rest of the natural events ANY DAY. Well, but the snow. I really don’t like it but my kids sure do! Thankfully we only get a big blizzard about once every five years.

It is really amazing how weather changes from area-to-area. We actually had tornado warnings in our area the last two days, and that is just plain weird! I’m thankful to have avoided earthquakes, even though we were near a fault where we lived last.

We live in tornado alley, too! That first picture really gets our attention here, too. We’ll turn on the weather and watch the skies and pay attention. Whatever school we’re working on at the moment automatically becomes science/weather class. =)

There actually were tornados that evening. Fortunately, they missed us by about 10 miles.

We’ve had many of those science/weather classes, too. I thought that once we moved from tornado alley we would not have as many of those classes. However, the day that I wrote this post, we had tornado warnings and hail. Another science/weather class…
