Free Things to Do in Philadelphia

These free things to do in Philadelphia are sure to keep your family happy and active while on the road.  Philadelphia is an amazing historically significant city that also has a great modern night life and food scene.  Between checking out the latest theme parks a few hours away or the great meals in the city by famous chefs, you can take advantage of great free adventures like the ones listed below.

Free Things To Do In Philadelphia

Independence Hall

Free and historic.  This is the first place to visit when heading to Philadelphia.  Tour the building for free and learn a bit more about our founding fathers and the role this hall played in the development of our nation.  While tickets are free, you may wish to spend a few dollars to reserve tickets in advance; since, the first come first served basis can fill up very quickly.

Dream Garden

A block from Independence Hall, this is a truly unique piece of art and culture.  It is located in the Curtis Center along Washington Square.  Made with Tiffany Glass, this is one of the most beautiful pieces of artwork in the city.

John Heinz Wildlife Refuge

Home of more than 300 bird species as well as a multitude of other animals, this sprawling refuge near the Philadelphia Airport is an excellent place to visit with your family.  While the city is full of museums and monuments, this offers you a great adventure in the outdoors everyone will love.

Mario Lanza Institute Museum

This famous singer and actor now has a museum in his honor that brings his history to life.  It also contains great history of the music and movie industry over the 1940’s and 1950’s.

Awbury Arboretum

For beautiful landscapes, trees and flowers head to the Arboretum.  This 55 acres of free public grounds to visit is landscaped beautifully for your enjoyment.

Philadelphia Brewing Company

Free tours show you just how local craft beer is made.  For a small upcharge you can also enjoy a sampling of the beer you just watched be processed.

Chemical Heritage History Museum

This is a great place for the geeks in your family to visit.  This is not about the nations history, but it is focused on the history of chemistry and it’s effect on our country and life.

Steps To The Philadelphia Museum Of Art

We all remember these steps from the scenes in the movie Rocky.  Download the movie theme, and try to run up the steps just like Rocky did!  Pose for pictures with your family in front of the museum and from the vantage that Rocky was met by his fans and followers in the movie.

U.S. Mint

Visit the place where coins are made.  Go through the self guided tour and learn about the process to create a design for our currency, as well as each step it takes to complete a new piece of currency to go into circulation.

The Liberty Bell

This is the most significant piece of history in the city, and it is well worth seeing.  Tickets to the museum and to see the Liberty Bell are free, but you may wish to spend a few dollars to reserve tickets in advance; since, the first come first served basis can fill up very quickly.

These free things to do in Philadelphia are of great historical impact, but they are also interactive and fun for everyone.  Philadelphia is one of the best frugal cities to visit because of the many free historical monuments, museums, and events you can enjoy seeing.
