Do you have a child that’s in middle school? If so, your child will learn a lot of new skills that they will need as they finish school and move on to college. Writing is one of these important skills. Because writing is so important to your child’s education, you need to help your middle school student improve those skills. Here are a few tips you can use to help your middle school child with writing.
Practice, Practice, Practice
One of the best ways you can help your middle school student improve their writing is to encourage them to practice! If your child isn’t writing, they aren’t improving their skills. Have your student keep a daily journal and challenge them to test out different types of writing. This can include writing narratives, informational pieces, or even their own fictional “bestseller.” The more you encourage your child to practice their writing skills, the more they’ll improve.
Learn Grammar Rules!
If your child is in middle school, writing expectations will be higher than ever. Teachers will expect your middle school student to write with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. This is a huge part of successful writing, so encourage your child to learn important grammar rules.
Proofread and Revise
Let’s face it. Most of us don’t get writing right on the first try. When you write your first draft, you’re more worried about getting your ideas on paper rather than getting all of your grammar and spelling right. This is why it’s so important that your middle school student proofread and revise their work. After your child writes the first draft, have them go through with a red pen and correct any spelling, punctuation or grammar errors. Once those are fixed, your child can improve their writing by revising sentences and ideas in the writing piece. This will help your middle school student greatly improve those writing skills.
Put Some Emotion into It
If your middle school student isn’t passionate about the writing topic, it really shows. Encourage your child to use their emotions to help improve their writing. When they’re choosing a topic to write about, they should choose something that interests them or that brings up emotions. Not only will this help improve the tone of their writing, it will also make it easier for your child to complete the assignment since so many ideas are bouncing around in their head.
