Hot Dots is a unique learning system from Educational Insights. Hot Dots is a card system in which each card has a question with multiple choice answers. Just before each possible answer is a black dot that interacts with the Hot Dots pen by signaling if the child answers the correct answer or an incorrect answer.
Hot Dots comes in many different types of card sets from Language Arts to Math and Science. When I looked at all the types available, I was drawn to the Context Clues. DS9 has problems putting some words and situations into context, so I was interested in seeing how this would work with him.
One of the things that I liked right away is that the dots are big enough that DS9 doesn’t have any problems getting the pen in the circle for it to register. I also like that we can use these cards to work on his reading while he is testing his critical thinking skills to determine what a certain word means or what word should replace another.
There are 50 cards with a question on each side for a total of 100 questions in the set that I received, and many of the sets are similar. The set that I received is priced at $9.99. There are some sets that are higher in price, as well. The Hot Dots pen is priced at $10.99 and takes 2 AAA batteries (not included). I am really glad that they used batteries that are easy to obtain!
Another great feature of this system is the positive reinforcement. When a question is missed, the light turns red, and a voice says (in a few different phrases) that the answer is wrong. When the answer is correct, the green light comes on (as in the picture above), and the voice says that the answer is correct (in a few different phrases).
I like this system and can’t wait to order more cards! I’m sure my budding scientist would like to try out some of the science cards…
