I’m joining The Blog Cruise sailing with the TOS Homeschool Crew, and the topic for this cruise is “Why did you decided to homeschool?”
Homeschooling was not really something that Don and I had ever considered. Sure, we knew a homeschooling family or two, but it wasn’t really something we felt called to do… until things happened to change our entire viewpoint of schools, as a whole.
When DD12 was almost 5, we decided to enroll her in a small, local, private school. She was already reading fairly proficiently, so we were led to believe that this particular school would work with her on her own level. Ummm… That is not exactly what happened. The problems started with the teacher tying DD12 into her chair and ended with the teacher “flipping out”, taking her car keys, leaving the kids unattended, and laying rubber in the parking lot. Yep, the teacher admitted to tying DD12 in her chair, and I witnessed the teacher’s tirade. It was time to look into other options…
That was 6 1/2 years ago, and we are still homeschooling. There must be other reasons, you might say. Yes, there sure are…
- We love that we can include our religious beliefs in our school work.
- The kids are not exposed to certain topics that prevail in the public school system.
- We can travel when regular schools are in session.
- We can work our schooling around therapy and doctor appointments.
- We are parents first and foremost. Homeschooling gives us the opportunity to spend this valuable time with our children who God has entrusted to our care.

Wow!
And I share your other reasons for homeschooling. I find at least one new reason every year!

We seem to find new reasons every year, too.
