We LOVE to get out and go places, whether it be to the museum, shopping, or doctor’s appointments.  We are always on the look out to find ways to get some school work in while driving, so I was happy to get the chance to review four CDs from Greathall Productions, inc.

When I started looking on their website to see what CDs I wanted to choose, I found a huge list of topics that I knew my kids would be interested in.  I liked how the titles were broken up into age categories.  It was such a HARD choice!

I finally chose:  William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and The Story of Rome, Gone West, Abraham Lincoln and the Heart of America, and Romeo and Juliet.  I have to say again what a hard choice this was, and we will likely be purchasing some of the other titles for future trips.

Great Hall 4We listened to Romeo and Juliet first.  I am amazed at how Jim Weiss was able to move from character-to-character while having certain voices for each character.  I was especially amazed as he switched from a female character’s voice to a male character’s voice and back again.  The kids really enjoyed it, too.

Great Hall 5One of our favorites was the one about Abraham Lincoln.  DS10 LOVES Abraham Lincoln and always says that President Lincoln is his favorite president.  He thoroughly enjoyed this CD!  I thought there was a lot of detail about President Lincoln and events of those times that I don’t remember reading before.

Great Hall 2Our other favorite was Gone West.  A couple of years ago, DD13 and I read a great book about pioneers in the wagon trains.  It was a topic that we both enjoyed.  Gone West covers the Explorers:  The Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, and Sacagawea.  Then, we moved on to the Pioneers:  Mr. Fulton’s Steamboat, the Oregon Trail, and the railroad.  It was quite comprehensive and held our attention completely.

I’ve been looking over the list to see what I would like to purchase, and I’m leaning toward, Greek Myths; Women in Blue or Gray; Masters of the Renaissance: Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and more; and Thomas Jefferson’s America.  There are actually quite a few more that I want to get, but well…  Not all at once!

Each CD sells for $13.45 plus shipping and handling.  Which ones would you get?

Just a Little Time to Hang Around

Hanging aroundWe homeschool moms are “on call” all the time.  We are there for just about everything that happens whether it be day or night.  Sometimes, we need to take a little time to just hang around like we saw this mom do.  Just a little time to ourselves…

Growing with Grammar

Growing with Grammar

I don’t know about you, but I had always been a one-size-fits-all type of homeschooler.  Oh, I got my curriculum from different vendors, but I felt that everything in that one curriculum should be on the same grade level.  For instance, grammar, spelling, and writing are all linked, so they should all be on the same grade level, right?

Well, my son has taught me that this is not the case.  Actually, both kids have problems with writing, only it is more pronounced in my son.  His fingers don’t have the normal amount of pinch or grip strength, and his hand shakes when he writes.  Therefore, he balks at writing a lot.  He gets the grammar, but he just has a hard time writing lots at a time.  The point is that his writing and his grammar are on different levels, and he is no longer a one-size-fits-all kid.

This is where Growing with Grammar comes in.  The Growing with Grammar series comes in eight grades (or levels) of coursework.  The series is comprised of Growing with Grammar (teaching grammar rules and usage), Soaring with Spelling and Vocabulary (teaching spelling and vocabulary), and Winning with Writing (teaching writing techniques).  A new addition to the series is Digging into Diagramming that is an optional addition to Growing with Grammar and is available in levels 3-8.
