The Sound of Music at the Hershey Theatre
The hills are alive with the smell of chocolate… Our family has been to a few shows at Hershey Theatre, and I think our new favorite experience there is The Sound of Music!
The Hershey Theatre was built in 1929-1933. It is not only an amazing place because of the fact that it was built during the Great Depression but also because of how beautiful it is! It brought the culture of the big city to the small town of Hershey, PA.
Much of the architecture of the time is still evident in the theatre. There is lots to see even while waiting in line for the ladies’ room upstairs.
And don’t forget to look up to see the beautiful ceilings in many places in the building! Aren’t the tiny mosaic tiles pretty?
The architectural elements of the theatre seating area are beautiful, as well, but it is so hard to take it all in during the time before the show and during intermission. The Hershey Theatre has a behind-the-scene tour. We did this last year, and it was well worth the money for all the things we were able to see and to learn about.
The Sound of Music is a Broadway show on tour that is running at the Hershey Theatre March 21-26, 2017. The Sound of Music has always been one of my favorite musicals, and I was looking forward to seeing this production! [FTC disclosure: I was provided tickets for my family to see the show in exchange for sharing our experience with you.]
We got there early to pick up our tickets, and then, we walked over to one of our favorite Hershey, PA restaurants to have supper before the show. After supper, we entered the theatre just before the doors opened for seating. Songbird headed over with me to see the merchandise that always seems to accompany the plays. She couldn’t resist purchasing the “Favorite Things Totebag“.
Soon, the show was starting, and we were lost in the music. Maria’s voice was just amazing! We felt as if we were transported into the play itself.
And let’s talk about The Mother Abbess… She could really belt it out! The duet of The Mother Abbess and Maria singing “My Favorite Things” was a great pairing of voices! But it wasn’t just great singing… This is definitely not just a reproduction of the movie that we all have grown to love, but it is a slight retelling of the story with a few changes. Some songs or scenes seemed to be a little different, and there was more of a sense of humor in some of the scenes. However, it was still the beloved story, only slightly refreshed. You can read about the actors/actresses in The Sound of Music on Tour here.
We LOVED seeing this play! Even if you don’t have the chance to see this production in Hershey, make sure to catch it in one of the other locations they are visiting! You can find out about their upcoming performances on The Sound of Music on Tour website.
