Thank you FlyBy Promotions for providing me with this copy of Janet’s Planet “Exploring Microgravity” for the purpose of this review.
My kids LOVE science! It can be in books, but of course, they prefer their science by computer or DVD. When I was approached with the possibility of reviewing a DVD about microgravity by Janet’s Planet, I knew my kids would be happy to see it. But I had never heard of Janet’s Planet before. So, I went on a search for more information on the subject. Janet’s Planet has a website with some space-related interactive activities. In fact, your child can even ask Janet questions on a message board. The DVD that I was sent for review is Exploring Microgravity and is a 37-minute of fun exploring gravity and microgravity. This DVD is the winner of a Regional Emmy Award, a Gracie Allen Award and a STEMFlorida Award. There is also a lesson plan for parents and teachers that is aligned with the Common Core standards.
So, we put this DVD in and started watching it. Soon, my kids were caught up in learning about mass and weight. About how the gravitational pull is greater on the earth than the moon, and why the sun’s gravitational pull doesn’t affect us like the earth’s does. We learned about the discoveries of Galileo, Newton, and Cavendish and how they built on the ideas of the one before. My son loved this DVD so much that he immediately had to watch it again, and he now wants to take a Zero G flight to experience microgravity.
This DVD is both fun and informative. I especially liked how she explained the difference in mass and weight and our weight on other planets. If you are looking for a good source of information on gravity and microgravity for elementary-aged kids, this would be a good resource to have.
You can purchase “Exploring Microgravity” in the Jr. Space Store for $9.99 plus tax, shipping and handling.
