Today’s ABCs of Homeschooling with Dawn over at 5 Kids and a Dog begins with the letter “F”. I am admitting defeat with the letter “F” because I couldn’t just choose one. I have two “F” words that work together.
For the first “F”, I want you to think back to Mary Poppins and her song about A Spoon Full of Sugar. At the beginning of the song, she says, “In ev’ry job that must be done, There is an element of fun, You find the fun and snap! The job’s a game” Fun is my first “F” word. If we don’t make our homeschooling fun, our kids are bored and inattentive. Whether it is finding a fun learning topic or just curling up on the couch to do math, we try to find the fun in everything we do.
Which brings me to my second “F” word… Fascinate. There were two definitions that really struck home: “to arouse the interest or curiosity of; allure” and “to capture the interest or hold the attention.” We want to find subjects and teaching methods that capture our children’s attention to encourage them to want to learn. If they don’t want to learn, school is no fun!
Yes, it sounds like the “E” for environment because it all fits together. To keep our kids engaged in learning, we must make the learning fun for them, and find what interests or fascinates them.
So what fun thing have you incorporated into your schooling to fascinate your kids?

FUN is what it’s all about with kids right!? Fun makes everything more… fascinating?! =)

FUN is big with Mom, too! 😉

I agree, you have to have fun or things get boring and they start fighting (hey another F word) you about their work.

Yes, when the fun disappears, the fighting can begin. We don’t see a whole lot of that in our house, though. I would imagine if we had 2 boys or 2 girls, it might be worse.
